 COMPENSATION INFORMATION
The salary range(s) represents our good faith estimate for the role at this time. While we strive to provide competitive and transparent compensation, there may be circumstances where an offer is above or outside of the listed range. We are open to discussing salary expectations with qualified candidates considering factors such as the candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies, experience and geographic location will all be considered during the hiring process.

  • Principal, Market Policy: $ 144,700 - $ 188,100

Southwest Power Pool (SPP) is seeking a highly experienced and knowledgeable energy markets professional to join our team as a Principal, Market Policy. This senior-level role will play a critical part in advancing SPP's market development and operational policy initiatives, particularly in support of Western stakeholders and services.

The successful candidate will serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in market operations policy, providing strategic insight, leadership, and coordination across SPP departments and stakeholder groups. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of organized wholesale markets, RTO governing structures, stakeholder dynamics, and the evolving operational and policy landscape.

 Key Responsibilities: 

  • Lead and support strategic market operations policy initiatives across SPP.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to resolve market issues.
  • Ensure compliance with SPP tariffs, contracts, and governing documents.
  • Support market policy development for SPP's Western services (Markets+, WEIS).
  • Develop strategic documents and represent SPP in industry working groups.
  • Communicate policy direction and updates to senior leadership.
  • Provide expertise and assistance across departments and manage special projects.

To be successful in the role we're looking for:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Accounting, Economics or another relevant field of study. [three years relevant job-related work experience may be considered in lieu of educational requirements]
  • Fifteen (15) years' experience in electric system operations, real-time operations support, operations training or other area of responsibility related to reliability operations and market operations
  • Extensive knowledge of electric utility market operational policies and practices, electric utility market operations, and markets including: market monitoring, generally accepted ratemaking, cost allocation and pricing principles, resource planning, policies and procedures of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and state regulatory commissions
  • Operational knowledge and experience in the Eastern and Western Interconnections
  • Knowledge of computer business applications and data base management systems
  • Flexibility and the ability to function with constantly changing and multiple priorities
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Understanding of and compliance with SPP Policies and Procedures

  • Previous supervisory experience

 Work Environment:

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines

 Position Type, Location, and Expected Hours of Work: 

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work week are Monday through Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Working extended hours may be required.

 Travel Requirement:

This position requires travel (approximately 30%)
