Data Services Manager (Legal)

Job Description:

Data Services is the team within ECAR (Epiq Class Action & Restructuring) which manages client data through the entire lifecycle of a class action, bankruptcy, or mass tort matter. Each project, while unique, undergoes a similar lifecycle and series of operations, including initial ETL of client data, physical mail and digital noticing campaigns to potential class members, receipt and processing of paper and web captured claim information, as well as computing and disbursing settlement awards.

The department consists of two sub-teams, one with a set of discipline specific Production Managers who oversee a shared “pool” consisting of over 60+ team members. The pool is made up of SQL developers/data analysts, business system analysts, QA data analysts, and reporting analysts. The sister “dedicated” team contains same roles but teams are overseen by managers who are aligned to a larger specific client project or client relationship.

We are looking for a Data Services Manager who can help us enhance and grow our SQL developer discipline. The SQL Developer team is critically important to the success of ECA – we operate in an industry with many different data challenges and this new manager will play an important role in us living up to our customers' expectations.

A successful candidate for this role will have a deep understanding of SQL best practices related to Microsoft SQL Server, ETL, data transformation, process improvement, as well as assess and promote new technologies, tools, and processes. In addition to technical skills, we are looking for a manager who has a passion to lead, motivate and assist the team as we navigate through tremendous year over year growth.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide administrative and personnel management for approximately 16 team members of associate-level, senior, and potentially lead/supervisory skill sets.
  • Maintain appropriate staffing/resource levels, as well as team core skills, to perform essential services to satisfy case requirements and deliverables.
  • Ensure capabilities are balanced across the team; eliminating single points of failure.
  • Work with peer-level managers to establish and maintain departmental standards and practices.
  • Provide direction, strategic vision, goals and objectives to the team.
  • Serve as escalation point to internal clients for issues, problems, complex technical decisions
  • Oversee the data related components of complex or key projects to ensure timely and accurate delivery
  • Set individual goals and objectives, conduct performance reviews, coaching, establish staff development plans, and manage current and future capability of the team.
  • Address all staffing and resource issues, establish performance improvement plans as necessary, work with HR and senior management as warranted.

Job Requirements

  • BS Computer Science, or related discipline, OR equivalent industry experience.
  • Ideally 5+ years experience as a data analysis manager, OR equivalent management experience
  • 2+ years team lead, supervisor, or management experience.
  • Understanding of relational database concepts, Microsoft SQL Server, tools, performance, techniques, industry standards and best practices.
  • Exposure to tSQL / TST, SQL Server unit testing frameworks a strong differentiator
  • Exposure to Azure Pipelines / GIT repos / Azure Test Plans strongly recommended.
  • Ability to work in an environment with deadlines and shifting priorities.
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational analysis, and time-management skills.
  • Strong people skills in collaboration, team building and change management.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; able to adjust for intended audience. Fluency in English.
  • Desire and willingness to continue to expand leadership skills and to lead by example.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and maintain cooperative professional relationships.

Candidates based in California, Colorado, New York or Washington:

The Compensation range for this role is 89,245.80 - 178,491.60 USD annually and may be eligible for an annual bonus. Actual compensation within that range will be dependent upon the individual's location, skills, experience and qualifications.
