Senior Director, Global Commercial Training and Development (Finance)

The Sr. Director, Global Commercial Training and Development leads the development and execution of global training and enablement strategy, programs, and delivery.

Leader is responsible for designing, delivering, and evaluating training programs to improve sales performance and effectiveness. They develop ongoing training, coach sales leaders, and analyze sales data to identify areas for improvement. This role also involves understanding sales strategies, collaborating with sales and marketing leaders and teams, and implementing best practices.

The leader manages a globally distributed team that collaborates with various departments to identify training needs, develop content and measure the effectiveness of training initiatives. The leader will be directly accountable to drive comprehensive onboarding, new hire training and assessment, develop coaching frameworks, and create impactful sales role plays and workshops ultimately increasing field productivity and supporting sales force transformation.

Location

The Senior Director, Global Commercial Training and Development will be based at Illumina headquarters in San Diego, CA.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategy:

  • Leads the development and execution of a global Commercial training and enablement strategy. This includes designing and implementing structured coaching frameworks, training curricula, and sales methodologies.
  • Defines and implements a consistent operating model for training programs.
  • Aligns training initiatives with the company's strategic goals and objectives.
  • In partnership with the Heads of Region and sub-regional General Managers, responsible for setting the training objectives and areas of focus, as well as developing and delivering training curriculum, for critical sales meetings, including the Global Commercial Meeting.

Training Development & Delivery:

  • Lead the development of comprehensive training curricula for all commercial roles, including sales management roles, incorporating both foundational skills and advanced selling techniques
  • Leads a team that designs, develops, and delivers engaging training programs across various modalities, including instructor-led sessions, e-learning modules, workshops, and coaching programs.

Process Improvement and KPIs:

  • Establish metrics and objectives for sales enablement and make recommendations for increasing sales productivity
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to training and enablement.
  • Regularly report out to the Global and Regional Commercial Leadership Teams (CLT) on progress of field effectiveness transformation

Cross-functional Collaboration:

  • Ensures alignment of training curriculum with Commercial goals and organizational roadmap
  • Partners with subregional GMs to ensure locally effective content and consistent delivery.
  • Works closely with leaders across sales, customer success, delivery, operations, and product teams to identify skill gaps and enablement needs.
  • Conducts field visits on request and as needed to assess skill levels, identify and prioritize opportunities for improvement across the organization, and provide coaching and feedback to sales team members and managers.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Education, or a related field required; MBA preferred.
  • A minimum of 20 years of experience in training, development, or a related role, with at least 15 years in a leadership position.
  • Professional/Adult Education Credentials and Certifications desirable
  • Strong analytical skills with ability to distill insights/takeaways from large sets of data
  • Highly inclusive and empathetic, team-first approach; proven skills in identifying, recruiting, developing, mentoring, coaching, motivating, and retaining top talent to build and maintain a high-performing consulting team
  • Demonstrated record of solving complex problems, directing teams, and completing challenging project activities within tight project timelines
  • Record of accomplishment of managing multiple engagements, including work plans, deliverables, budgets and schedules, and accounts receivable
  • Effective ability to present and communicate findings and recommendations to a senior audience
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work seamlessly and collaboratively with various stakeholders
  • Proven ability to build new thought leadership content
  • Ability to travel at least 25% of the time

The estimated base salary range for the Senior Director, Global Commercial Training and Development role based in the United States of America is: $201,100 - $301,700. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual's qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
