Distributed Energy Systems Engineer (Finance)



We are seeking a highly capable and multidisciplinary Distributed Generation Engineer to support the development, design, and integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) and microgrid systems. This role is ideal for an engineer with a background in Combined Heat and Power (CHP), fuel cells, solar PV, battery storage, and natural gas generators, who can merge mechanical and electrical engineering principles into cohesive and innovative energy solutions.

The selected candidate will operate in a remote, collaborative, and cross-functional team environment to define Basis of Design, support project development, and apply technical tools to model and simulate system performance. A strong foundation in both mechanical and electrical engineering disciplines is essential, along with demonstrated proficiency in engineering software and programming tools.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead technical development for distributed generation and microgrid projects, integrating a variety of DER assets into complete and viable solutions.
  • Support engineering studies and feasibility assessments involving CHP, solar PV, fuel cells, batteries, and thermal generation assets.
  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team to establish Basis of Design, develop scopes of work, and guide conceptual through detailed design.
  • Perform system modeling and simulation using tools such as MATLAB, AutoCAD, SOLIDWORKS, and other electrical/thermal simulation software.
  • Develop and review mechanical and electrical schematics, system layouts, and control strategies, including PLC programming and I/O integration.
  • Apply core mechanical engineering knowledge including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, machine design, and materials science to system-level analysis.
  • Review interconnection strategies, system controls, and microgrid architecture from both mechanical and electrical perspectives.
  • Engage with clients, participate in site assessments, and support the creation of deliverables such as design packages, proposals, and commissioning plans.
  • Ability to travel approximately 20% for site visits, design coordination, and stakeholder meetings.

This position is incentive plan eligible.

The annual base salary range for this position is $150,000 - $187,000. Please note that this salary information serves as a general guideline.   • 7-10 years of experience in the energy sector, with a strong focus on distributed generation and energy system integration.
  • Active Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
  • Proficiency in technical software: SOLIDWORKS, AutoCAD, MATLAB, and electrical simulation platforms (e.g., ETAP, SKM).
  • Familiarity with PLC programming, control systems, and distributed control architectures.
  • Demonstrated expertise in both mechanical systems (thermal-fluid processes, materials, rotating equipment) and electrical systems (load flow, power electronics, wiring diagrams).
