Post-Doctoral Researcher - Chemical, Bio & Mat Eng (Finance)

College: College of Engineering
Department: Chemical, Bio and Materials Engineering

Position Summary

The Thompson Group is seeking a post-doctoral researcher to conduct research in the design, synthesis, characterization, and evaluation of early transition metal carbides and nitrides for use in catalytic and energy storage applications. A key target research is ammonia synthesis, a process that has significant carbon and energy footprints; there is strong incentive to develop efficient, high activity catalysts that operate at milder conditions. Under the supervision of Professor Thompson (PI) with mentorship from Dr. Randolph McGee (Sr. Research Scientist at the University of Delaware), the post-doctoral researcher will investigate the synergistic interactions between the carbides/nitrides and other catalytic metals using in situ and ex situ characterization, and reaction testing techniques.Minimum Qualifications

Doctoral degree from an accredited institution with the appropriate experience and training in Chemical Engineering or related field. Must meet university criteria for the appointment rank of Post-Doctoral Researcher.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or Materials Science and Engineering, with a deep knowledge of heterogeneous catalysis.
  • Ability to develop and execute research methodologies and protocols.
  • Effective oral and written communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and other researchers.
  • Experience with typical catalyst characterization techniques.
  • Understanding of general and specific lab safety procedures.

Additional information for Applicants

The application package must include a cover letter, CV, and a one-page description of their experience and research interests related to this position.

****This job is subject to Foreign Influence Screening: During the 2021 Florida legislative session, House Bill 7017 ("HB 7017") was passed and later signed into law by Governor DeSantis. The new law modifies a variety of Florida Statutes to address concerns regarding improper foreign influence. With regard to employment at major research institutions like the University of South Florida, the new law requires thorough review of certain applicants for positions involving research.
