Project Designer/Project Engineer 1 (Finance)



SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS

Apply electrical, mechanical, chemical, and/or computer engineering principles to develop a comprehensive instrumentation and control (I&C) system design for multiple projects with various clients simultaneously. The design will include, but is not limited to, the following I&C project domains: industrial control panel design, Water & Wastewater processes, process and analytical instruments, PLCs, RF technology and radios, networking, communications infrastructure, VFDs, Soft Starts, motor starters, and relevant UL and NEC codes. Experience with P&ID, Electrical, and ISA loop drawings is required.

LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE

The necessary knowledge level for this position requires proven experience and expertise in the following I&C project domains. The level of knowledge will be assessed and determined by completing the Inframark Project Engineering Expertise Matrix.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Field Instrumentation Design
  • Make field instrumentation selections based on the following: (a) what was identified in our scope letter, (b) the requirements as defined in the contract documents, (c) any standardized products currently in use at the facility, and (d) the project budget.
  • Interprets the contract documents to determine installation requirements and appropriate mounting hardware, sunshields, surge protection, etc.
  • Generates a Field Instrumentation Submittal for review and approval by the project engineer and owner.
  • Responds to and follows up on submittal comments.
  • Control Panel Design
  • Develops panel hardware drawings for all provided panels based on the following: (a) what was identified in our scope letter, (b) the requirements as defined in the contract documents, (c) any standardized products currently in use at the facility, and (d) the project budget.
  • Interprets the Contract Documents to determine installation requirements (e.g., panel sizing, panel rating, interior versus exterior location, etc.).
  • Develops hardwired IO list using standard templates.
  • Panel design shall include a bill of materials with "major buyout" items (e.g., enclosure, PLC hardware, network hardware) and the I/O list.
  • Coordinates and manages the drafting team's efforts to efficiently produce AutoCAD drawings.
  • Generates a Panel Hardware Submittal for review and approval by the project engineer and owner.
  • Responds to and follows up on submittal comments.
  • Network Design
  • Works with Inframark's OT personnel to design SCADA/PLC control systems networks based on the following: (a) networking best practices, (b) what was quoted in our scope letter, and (c) the requirements outlined in the contract documents.
  • Selects copper and fiber cabling and network hardware based on the above criteria, as well as (a) any standardized products currently used at the facility and (b) the project budget.
  • Creates detailed network diagrams showing all network hardware (servers, PLCs, workstations, switches, firewalls, radios, etc.) and all relevant communication paths and protocols (fiber, Ethernet, serial, radio, etc.).
  • Collaborates with Inframark's OT personnel and HMI technical leads to assist in selecting SCADA and networking software.
  • Incorporates third-party equipment and systems into network diagrams, recognizing incompatibilities between Inframark's network and third-party networks.
  • Generates fiber, network, and SCADA hardware and software submittals for review and approval by the project engineer and owner.
  • Responds to and follows up on submittal comments.
  • Camera & Security System Design
  • As applicable, select camera and security system hardware (e.g. card readers, door controllers, fence monitors) and software based on the following: (a) what was identified in our scope letter, (b) the requirements as defined in the contract documents, (c) any standardized products currently in use at the facility, and (d) the project budget.
  • Interprets the contract documents to determine installation requirements.
  • Generates a Camera & Security Subsystem Submittal for review and approval by the project engineer and owner.
  • Responds to and follows up on submittal comments.
  • ISA Loop Drawings
  • Create loop drawings in accordance with the contract documents.
  • Coordinates and manages the drafting team's efforts to produce AutoCAD drawings efficiently.
  • Generates a Loop Drawings Submittal for review and approval by the project engineer and owner.
  • Responds to and follows up on submittal comments.
  • P&ID Drawings
  • Create P&ID drawings in accordance with the contract documents.
  • Coordinates and manages the drafting team's efforts to produce AutoCAD drawings efficiently.
  • Generates a P&ID Drawings Submittal for review and approval by the project engineer and owner.
  • Responds to and follows up on submittal comments.
  • Shows proficiency in understanding both water treatment and wastewater treatment processes.
  • Interpret contract documents, be proficient in identifying equipment requirements within our scope, and develop a general understanding of the overall process.
  • Provides support and assistance to Inframark's project team members from kickoff through startup and closeout. Acts as the lead Engineer for the project.
  • Develop a hardwired I/O list based on contract P&IDs, utilizing established I/O templates.
  • Conducts project site visits to assess and document conditions for both sales support and project fulfillment. Must be able to review and understand existing conditions to develop drawings, select materials, and engineer the project based on field conditions and project requirements.
  • Understands and incorporates third-party hardware and system designs into the overall project design.
  • For a given project, develops the knowledge and expertise needed to lead design or submittal review meetings with the Engineer and Owner, as directed by the Project Manager. Develops a "Trusted Advisor" role with the Engineer and Owner.
  • Provides clear and accurate information about hardware to be ordered by the Purchasing/Admin resource responsible for creating and issuing purchase orders. Offers assistance and solutions if substitutions or alternatives are needed due to unavailability, lead times, or cost.
  • Assist in creating a Control Narrative Submittal by interpreting the Functional Description provided in the Contract Documents and our I/O list.
  • Support factory acceptance and site acceptance test preparation, setup, and execution.
  • Leads the creation of "As-installed" or "For Record" documentation for Panel Drawings, Loop Drawings, and Network Diagrams. Coordinates with the startup team to gather and input information collected during startup (e.g., field terminal numbers). Performs a final quality control check of the documentation and prepares submittals for transmittal.
  • Prepares Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Manuals by compiling ISA datasheets created during the design document phase and manufacturers' standard manuals or instructions.
  • Submits them for review and approval; addresses and follows up on comments from the Engineer and Owner.
  • Builds relationships with vendors to obtain and review quotes for hardware selection, ensuring equipment accuracy and protecting the project budget.
  • Familiarize yourself with Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and National Electrical Code (NEC) standards to incorporate these requirements into project design efforts.
  • Gains familiarity with PLC and HMI/SCADA software and programming tools to understand the fundamental concepts and technical aspects of PLC and SCADA development.
  • Provides technical support to the Sales and Marketing teams, assisting with technical consultation, sales quotations, and quotation review as needed.
  • Follows up with the Sales group after design to identify lessons learned that could improve future sales estimates and bidding.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

  • A bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, chemical, or computer engineering is preferred.
  • Experience with field instrumentation hardware, control panel design, and networking design and hardware.
  • Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Ability to orally communicate effectively with customers, management, and other co-workers.
  • Regular use of the telephone and e-mail for communication.
  • Sitting for extended periods is common.
  • Hearing and vision within normal ranges are essential for normal conversations, receiving everyday information, and preparing or inspecting documents.
  • No heavy lifting is expected. Good manual dexterity for operating common office equipment such as computers, printers, scanners, and copiers.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The job is largely performed at one of Inframarks' offices with occasional or periodic visits to the job site.

TRAVEL
