Head of UI Engineering, VP (Finance)

State Street seeks an exceptional, visionary Head of UI Engineering to lead front-end development on our design team and to drive technical excellence across our financial services platforms. You are a strategic technical leader with a proven track record of building and scaling a UI engineering practice within complex, regulated environments. You excel at translating business objectives into robust technical architectures that deliver measurable impact across multiple product lines and business units. You can champion modern development practices at the highest levels of the organization while building strong partnerships across design, product, and engineering stakeholders. You thrive in ambiguous, high-stakes environments and are passionate about developing exceptional user interfaces that drive business growth and client satisfaction.

This role is performed in a hybrid model. You can balance working from home and the office to meet your needs and role requirements.

What you will be responsible for

  • Lead organizational UI engineering strategy: Define and execute the comprehensive front-end architecture vision and strategy across corporate digital products and services, ensuring alignment with business objectives and regulatory requirements.
  • Build and scale high-performing teams: Recruit, develop, and manage a team of 3-5 UI engineering professionals, including senior front-end developers, technical leads, UI architects, and development operations specialists across multiple locations.
  • Drive executive stakeholder engagement: Present technical strategies and initiatives to senior leadership, securing buy-in and resources for front-end technology investments.
  • Establish engineering excellence standards: Create and implement technical standards, development processes, and architectural patterns that ensure consistency and quality across all digital touchpoints while enabling scalable product development.
  • Champion modern development culture: Evangelize cutting-edge front-end technologies and methodologies throughout the organization, train cross-functional teams, and establish performance optimization as a cornerstone of product development.
  • Oversee end-to-end technical operations: Manage complex, multi-year front-end initiatives from conception through implementation, coordinating with backend engineering, DevOps, compliance, and business teams.
  • Measure and optimize technical impact: Establish key performance indicators for front-end success, regularly assess the business impact of UI engineering initiatives, and continuously optimize based on performance metrics and user feedback.
  • Navigate regulatory and compliance requirements: Ensure all front-end solutions meet stringent financial services regulations while maintaining exceptional performance and user experiences.
  • Foster innovation and emerging technologies: Lead exploration of cutting-edge UI technologies, including micro-frontends, Progressive Web Apps, AI/ML integration, and advanced data visualization techniques.

Education & Preferred Qualifications

Education

  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), or related technical field preferred; Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience required

Experience
  • 10+ years of progressive UI engineering leadership experience in enterprise software or financial services environments
  • 5+ years in senior management roles leading cross-functional front-end development organizations
  • Proven track record of successful digital transformation initiatives in large, complex organizations
  • Experience building and maintaining design systems and component libraries at enterprise scale
  • Strong background in both B2B and B2C product development within regulated industries

Skills
  • Exceptional strategic thinking and technical acumen with the ability to translate user needs into scalable technical solutions.
  • Outstanding leadership and people management capabilities with experience building diverse, high-performing engineering teams.
  • Expert-level knowledge of modern JavaScript frameworks, front-end architecture patterns, and performance optimization techniques.
  • Deep understanding of modern development tools, CI/CD pipelines, and emerging trends in front-end technology.
  • Superior communication and presentation skills with the ability to influence at all organizational levels.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience using performance metrics and technical KPIs to drive decision-making.
  • Proven ability to manage complex, multi-stakeholder technical initiatives in matrixed organizations.

Additional optional requirements
  • Financial services expertise: Deep understanding of trading systems, investment management platforms, or institutional financial services applications and their unique technical requirements.
  • Digital transformation leadership: Proven experience leading organization-wide front-end modernization initiatives and technical change management.
  • Advanced architectural capabilities: Experience establishing and scaling micro-frontend architectures, including module federation and distributed front-end systems.
  • Technology leadership: Understanding of modern development practices, API design, cloud platforms, and technical architecture as it relates to front-end development.
  • Global experience: Experience managing distributed engineering teams and building applications for international markets with varying regulatory requirements.
  • Accessibility expertise: Knowledge of inclusive design principles and accessibility compliance (WCAG/EAA) implementation at enterprise scale.
  • Mentorship experience: Experience leading technical initiatives and mentoring development teams in best practices and coding standards.

Salary Range:
$150,000 - $232,500 Annual

The range quoted above applies to the role in the primary location specified. If the candidate would ultimately work outside of the primary location above, the applicable range could differ.
